Champions of Respect Awards

Temple Address

The Temple Address is an annual event hosted by the Evangelical Alliance that seeks to raise the profile of Christian values with those in leadership in many areas of public life within UK society. For the first time in 2005, the Champion of Respect Awards were presented at the Address.

The theme for the 2005 Temple Address was “Respect”, with the focus being on young people. Among the invited guests were Members of Parliament, clergy, journalists and influential leaders from around the UK.

Respect has become a 21st century word which goes to the very heart of human relationships. For many people today the word respect could be a paraphrase of Jesus’ words “do to others as you would have them do to you”.

The evening’s programme reflected the respect agenda. During the reception a group of young people engaged with guests to challenge their perceptions about the younger generation. A drama presentation written by a youngDrama group offender brought to life the struggles young people have to show respect to others. Music for the evening was provided by TVB, Youth for Christ’s band.

The Champions of Respect Awards were presented by Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. The top award, the Anthony Walker Memorial Prize, was presented by Mrs Gee Walker, Anthony's mother.

This 2005 Temple Address was given by Dr Williams. Entitled 'Becoming Trustworthy: Respect and Self-Respect'.

The 6th Temple Address - November 2006

Continuing the theme of the Evangelical Alliance’s ‘Respect’ campaign, the focus for the 2006 Temple Address is the issue of ‘equality and diversity in a contemporary society’. We are delighted that the speaker for this year’s Address will be Trevor Phillips, Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality.

In addition to Trevor Phillips’ address the evening will again include the presentation of the Champions of Respect Awards and the Anthony Walker Memorial Prize.
